Below is a floating die clash found on a 1972D Lincoln cent reverse.
It was discovered by Bob Piazza.

From Mike Diamond:
“The reverse die that struck this 1972-D cent carries the impression of what was probably a die fragment derived from another striking chamber or from a previously-installed die.  In the latter case, the die fragment would most likely have lodged in a die recess before falling out after a new die was installed.  The die fragment was driven into the reverse die at an angle, generating an impression of the peripheral field and the top of two incuse letters.  The clash mark does not match any portion of the obverse die.  Therefore, it is most likely a piece from another cent reverse die.  This is the first “exogenous floating die clash”, in that the die fragment did not calve from either of the dies that struck this cent.”
