Possible MAD Die Clashes

This section contains possible MAD clashes; however, due to the lack of peripheral letter or design transfer being seen on the host coin, they are not included as MAD clashes. If in the future these possible clashes show more evidence of being MAD clashes, they will be assigned a number and included in the LMC or appropriate section.

Seen below is a 1991 Lincoln cent where an arc appears through the date. The coin examined came from an LDS die that had abrasion. Meanwhile the coin had some plating issues which make it hard to conclusively identify if and what type of clash this could be. An earlier MDS or EDS example should shed light on these marks. This 1998P Lincoln cent shows a curved line running through the lower part of Lincoln’s bust. While this may be the edge of the anvil die, there is no evidence of letter or design transfer which would make it a concrete MAD clash. However, there seems to be a similarity in the anomalies seen, in size , location and shape when compared to the next possible MAD clash discussed. (see next picture and comments)

This is a 1999P Lincoln cent that also shows a similar curved line as seen in the 1998P Lincoln cent which was discussed aboved. The similarities between the two anomalies indicate that a repetitious pattern may be occurring. While this could be a MAD clash, more evidence is needed to confirm that classification.

This is another 1999P Lincoln cent that shows a possible MAD clash on the obverse. However, with the absence of a design element clash mark other than the edge of the die, it cannot be verified as a true MAD clash.

This 1993 Lincoln cent does show possibilities of having a radical misaligned die clash. However, the absence of identifying letter clashes from the reverse die puts it in the category of being a ‘maybe.’

The image to the left shows the arc mark possibly left by the rim of the reverse die.

This is another possible radical MAD clash from Joe Koelling. While the marks left fit the curvature of the opposing die, there are no other indicators to confirm that this is positively a radical MAD clash.

Here we have another possible radical  misaligned die clash.  This one is on a 1998(P) cent.  The shape and position match what we would expect to see of this anomaly.  However, the absence of other identifying marks on the inside of the curve, preclude us from positively identifying it as a radical MAD clash.  This coin is from Bob Piazza’s  personal collection.

The familiar “fang” shape die dent is seen in the field below the letter T in LIBERTY on this 1994(P) Lincoln cent. More than likely it was caused by a dropped die. However, since there are no identifying clash marks to determine the position or validity of this being a clashing of the dies. it is filed as a possible radical MAD clash.

This 1993(P) Lincoln cent shows the familiar “fang” shape of a dropped die indenting the obverse die. While it does have some indication of letters being clashed into the die, the overall clash mark is just too weak to gain our confidence of being a radical MAD clash.

The overlay provided shows the possible position of the dies when they might have clashed.

This 1999(P) Lincoln cent shows possibilities of being a radical MAD clash. However, even though the familiar “fang” shape is present, there are no design clash marks to identify the position of the dies when they clashed.

The overlay provide shows the more likely die positions during the clash event.

This coin is in the collection of Joe Koelling.

1995-D Lincoln cent with possible radical MAD die clash

The possible radical MAD die clash shows as a cured line above the date. Overlays do indicate that this could be that type of die clash. However, the absence of any identifying clash marks on the inside of the curve put it in the “possible” category.

This coin is in the collection of Joe Koelling.

1998(P) Lincoln cent with possible radical MAD die clash Again we see the familiar fang shaped clash mark that is associated with radical MAD die clashes above Lincoln’s statue on the reverse of this 1998 cent. However, the absence of clash marks on the inside of the curved anomaly put it into the “possible” category. This coin is in the collection of Joe Koelling.

We see the familiar fang shaped clash mark that is associated with radical MAD die clashes above Lincoln’s statue on the reverse of this 1997 cent. However, the absence of clash marks on the inside of the curved anomaly put it into the “possible” category. This coin is in the collection of Joe Koelling.

The familiar “fang” shaped  mark can be seen in bays 6 and 7. However, since there is no reference on that mark we cannot assume that it is a radical MAD die clash.
