Even for an 1865 three cent piece, this is an unusually strong die clash. Close examination shows three distinct sets of clash marks in places. This may have been caused by die chatter (similar to machine doubling, but occurring during the clash).

 

Both the obverse and reverse dies have been affected and neither die has been abraded.

The overlay shows the relative positioning of the dies when they clashed.

This picture above shows the clash marks left by the Roman numeral three in Liberty’s face. Normally, a clashing of the dies does not reach down into the recess of the opposing die to this extent.
