ADC-1c-1988-02
This is a very strong die clash found on a 1988 Lincoln cent. It is unusual to see peripheral design elements transfer from one die to the other. However, this die clash shows traces of the letters ON and parts of UNITED on the obverse die.
There is also a more than usual rotation between the dies when they did clash. The normal rotation is approximately 5°, but in this case, the rotation is 11°.
This coin is in the collection of Robert Mohan.
The image above shows the clash marks left by the bays from the reverse die. Notice the unusual rotation of 11°.
The letters ON from the word ONE can be seen clearly clashed to the left of Lincoln’s head. The Memorial building base line as well as some of the clash marks from the bays are also seen.
Partial letters from the word UNITED (DETI) are clash into the area below and to the left of Lincoln’s bust.
The image to the right shows the clash mark generated by the base line of Lincoln’s bust as it passes through the letters STA of STATES and the TED of UNITED.
The clash mark generated by the back of Lincoln’s bust can be seen as It passes through the T and I of UNITED and down into bay 1 of the Memorial building.
The outline of Lincoln’s head can be seen as it passes through the NE of ONE and the CE of the word CENT.
Both the obverse and reverse dies were abraded to remove this die clash event.
