ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-92; Stages “B” & “C”
This 1960D(SD) Lincoln cent shows three separate clash events that occurred at different times.
2 3 5 / 1 3 4 5
The first clash event seen involves the area around the mintmark. A line is seen through the D mintmark which was generated by the bases of the letters AME of AMERICA. The corresponding clash mark can be seen on the reverse die as a faint outlined D in the lower part of the M of AMERICA.
The second clash event occurred in the area under Lincoln’s bust. Letters from the word STATES can be seen faintly in that area. The letter E from UNITED can be seen clashed into the field adjacent to the lower left corner of the bust. A line through the upper part of the word SATES is from the lower part of Lincoln’s bust and the line curving through the E of UNITED is from the same device on the obverse. The cleft mark seen from the right top of the second T in STATES is from the fold of Lincoln’s jacket and is an excellent indicator of the position of the dies when they did meet.
The last clash event seen on this coin was generated by the top of Lincoln’s head and seen as a line through the NE of ONE and the C of CENT. There was no counter part to this clash seen on the obverse die.
Stage “B” of this coin can be recognized by the die chip in the letter R of LIBERTY. Stage “C” has the same die chip, but a die break has formed between the B and E of LIBERTY. The same die clash marks can be seen on both stages.
