Stage “C”, Events “A” & “B”
1 3 4 / 1D 3 5D
Event “A” Event “B”
Event “A” die clash occurred when the hammer die tilted towards the bottom of the anvil die. The result form this clash left faint clash marks from the words ONE CENT above Lincoln’s head. The reverse die was affected with clash marks seen through the E of ONE and the C of CENT
Event “B” occurred when the hammer die tilted towards the top of the anvil die. This left clash marks from the word STATES in the area under Lincoln’s bust and a “bar” through the word STATES. Also see is a clash mark through the letter D from UNITED.
The overlay below shows the relationship of the dies when they did meet.
The image to the left shows the clash mark left by Lincoln’s back from the bottom of the D in UNITED. The image to the right shows die damage that may be feeder arm related. A faint Memorial roof line clash mark can be seen by the bottom of the 1 digit in the date This clash is coupled with RPM, 1960D-1MM-113 seen to the right of the images below.
This coin is from the collection of Bob Piazza.
Stage “D”, Events “C” & “D”
1 2 3D 4D / 1T 2 3D
While the marks left from the clashing of the dies are not particularly strong, the clash mark left by the top of the letter A in STATES gives good guidance to the positioning of the dies when they did clash. The extra thickness of the middle “bar” through the word STATES indicates that more than one clash event occurred in this area
The obverse die shows more clash marks than the previous Stage “C”, events “A” & “B”
Two clash events are seen through the E of UNITED. The previous die clash from the bottom of the D has faded away.
The image to the above right shows the multiple clash marks from the reverse die.
The reverse die shows multiple sets of clash mark between the C and E of CENT. The close proximity of the clash marks may indicate that these were formed by die chatter and not by three separate clashings of the dies.
Two Memorial building roof line clashes can be seen, with the lower one being stronger than previously seen in Stage “C”, events “A” & “B”.
Stage “E”
2 3 4 /
The obverse clash marks have become weaker, but are still visible. The reverse die has been changed and has no clash marks. Also noted is the absences of any die scratching indicating that this may have been a new reverse die.
