ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-28; Stages “B”, “C”, “D”, “E” and “F”
Stage “B” – one clash event
The above images a show the first clash event found on die 28 and an overlay showing the approximate location of the dies when they did clash.
2 3 / 1 3 WRPM – 141 Stage “C”
The tilted die clash can be seen (top image) as the tops of the letters TAT from the word STATES clashed into the area below Lincoln’s bust. A bar is seen through the top of the word STATES caused by the clash created by the field and the lower part of Lincoln’s bust
The D from UNITED can be seen clashed into the field area by Lincoln’s lower right shoulder. A line inside the D of UNITED is the clash created by Lincoln’s shoulder and the field.
Two consistencies that are found through the known die life of the obverse are a RPM (WRPM – 141 & 1960D-1MM-169) and a die crack (image to the top right) through Lincoln’s shoulder above the VDB.
The reverse has a number of die chips in and around the O of ONE and a die crack that joined the CE of CENT.
Stage “C” – two clash events
The above images show the second and third clash event that occurred on die 28. The two overlays above show the relative positions of the dies when they did clash.
3 4 6 / T1 2 3 WRPM-141 Stage “D”
Once again we see the letters from the word STATES clashed into the area below Lincoln’s bust. However, notice that there is a shift downward to the bar seen through the word STATES. The overlay above right best represents the position of the dies when this clash was created. Also notice that the top bar through STATES has thickened, indicating that there may have been another clash event.
The above image to the left shows a strengthening of clash mark previously seen in Stage “B”. Notice that the line seen in the D of UNITED has faded and is replaced by a clash mark above and below that letter. The image to the right shows the clash mark created by the field and the lapel of Lincoln’s jacket.
The clash mark seen above was created by the right corner of the Memorial building’s roof.
A new die chip is seen on the left corner of the stylobate (image to the left) and the connecting die crack has strengthened.
Stage “D” – no new clash events.
Stage “D” of this 1960-D small date Lincoln cent starts off with a new reverse with no indications of clash marks on that die. While it does not appear to be a new die, it does appear to be a re-furbish reverse die.
3 4 6 / WRPM-141 Stage “E”
The clash mark by the date is still seen from the previous stage “C”. However, the E in LIBERTY has developed a die chip as seen in the above lower image.
The clash left by the memorial building roof is still present as seen in the image to the above left. However, the reverse has none of the previous die makers seen in stage “C” indicating that the die was changed. A die scrape is seen through the N of UNITED on this reverse die.
The die crack connecting the C and E of CENT is gone, but a die scrape is seen by the middle arm of the E in ONE.
Stage “E” – two clash events
It did not take long for Stage “E” to develop to clash events. The above overlays shoe the relative position of the dies when they did clash.
2 3 4 6 / 1 2 3 WRPM – 141 Stage I
Again we see multiple letters from the word STATES clashed into the area below Lincoln’s bust. The die crack in Lincoln’s shoulder has remained the same size (see black arrow). The die clash mark from the Memorial building roof has had another die clash added. This new die clash mark is above the previous one that came into being in Stage “B”.
A clash mark in the form of a bar is seen through the word STATES. This clash mark is a bit lower that the clash marks seen in previous events. The clash mark caused by the jacket’s lapel seen in the above left image is further to the left that the clash mark seen in Stage “B”. The clash mark created by the back of Lincoln’s jacket intersects the E of UNITED while it was previously through the D of UNITED.
The die clash created by the E of UNITED can be seen in the field by the lower part of Lincoln’s jacket. Another image of the persistent die crack. The reverse die has formed a die chip on the upper part of the O in ONE. The obverse die has developed a new die chip in the B of LIBERTY.
Stage “F” – no new die clash events
There are no new die clash events for this stage. However, the reverse die has bee replaced. This will make the third reverse die that has been used with the obverse die. All die clash marks on the obverse have just about faded, except for the ones near and around the date.
4 / WRPM-141 Stage “J”
The die chips in the B and E of LIBERTY seen in Stage “F” are still present.
The die crack in the shoulder has not grown.
